Pharmacist Recognized as Beckley VAMC Federal Woman of the Year

The Beckley VA Medical Center held its annual “Federal Woman of the Year,” recognizing seven VA female employees, with the theme of “Women Who Have Made Great Achievements.”

This year’s winner is Dr. Hannah Keeney, Pharm.D., BC-ADM a Clinical Pharmacist Provider at the Princeton VA Outpatient Clinic. Dr. Keeney is known for being eager to learn, sharing her knowledge with pharmacy students and residents, and her involvement in the community.

Dr. Keeney has a strong interest in diabetes and wanted to learn even more to help the Veterans served at Beckley VAMC. On her own, she worked hard to obtain more than 500 clinical practice hours to become eligible to even take the American Association of Diabetes Educators exam. She passed the exam with flying colors and now must maintain professional development requirements and have at least 1,000 practice hours to recertify. She is only one of two Beckley VAMC employees to hold this certificate.

She also serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents on their rotations, even developing a section of their teaching certificate program. Because of her location in southern West Virginia, VA is now able to offer rotations in that part of the state. This helps the facility with recruitment of future pharmacists.

Her co-workers say she is always going above and beyond, especially with helping Veterans managing their diabetes. She is the leading prescriber of continuous glucose monitoring systems.

Within the community, you’ll also find Dr. Kenney active as a leader. She is a volunteer at the WECAN Mentoring program at the Mercer County Children’s Home Society. The motto of this program is “WECAN make a difference one child at a time”. Dr. Keeney promotes positive role modeling and helps with social skill building and tutoring, while focusing on the strengths and interests of a child. WECAN provides one-on-one mentoring, summer camps, reading programs, special events, and extracurricular activities.
