Face masks now optional in certain circumstances

Birmingham , AL — On May 11, 2023, the federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19, declared under Section 319 of the Public Health Service Act, expired.
The following guidance is issued following the PHE expiration. This guidance applies to all sites of care in the Birmingham VA Health Care System.
Masking is now optional for patients, visitors, and employees.
Pre-procedure COVID-19 testing for patients will be at the discretion of the provider, based on symptoms displayed by the patient.
If a patient or a visitor wishes for Birmingham VA Health Care System staff to wear a mask in a clinical setting, those employees will respect those wishes and wear a mask.
