Congratulations to the UAB Physician residents and BVAHCS Dental Residents for completing their residencies to become practicing physicians and dentists.  On May 18, 146 residents across multiple specialties were celebrated at the Birmingham VA.

"Job well done to all of our newest attending physicians," said Dr. Andrew Sellers, Birmingham VA Chief of Staff. "They all have worked hard for a long time to reach this point and are well-deserving of this recognition. We look forward to their leadership in practice."

The ceremony was the 23rd formal event recognizing the achievements of graduating residents. The tradition began in 1998, marking 26 years celebrating this professional milestone. Each graduate received a framed certificate presented by Dr. Ladi Kukoyi, Executive Director of the BVAHCS; Dr. Andrew Sellers, BVAHCS Chief of Staff; and Dr. Anupam Agarwal, Dean of the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. Site Directors, program directors, service chiefs, and many UAB leaders also attended this celebration.

"This ceremony is our opportunity to honor our residents and celebrate our academic partnership with UAB," said Susan Laing, Ph.D., Associate Chief of Staff for Education. "Our affiliation with UAB has resulted in thousands of physicians representing important specialties of various clinical disciplines. The Birmingham VA is one of the top training hospitals in the United States, and these physicians and dentists enter the professional capacity of their careers with a broader understanding of patient care. Most importantly, these doctors and dentists connect to America's heroes, our Veterans, and that connection benefits all health care institutions."

"The ceremony symbolizes the culmination of years of hard work and dedication and serves as a proud moment to acknowledge the residents’ accomplishments and the invaluable lessons learned in caring for our nation's Veterans," added Dr. Sellers. "We are grateful to the care our residents have provided to our Veterans and always hope that many will pursue positions at the VA at some point in their careers."
