In a tribute to the heroes of the Post-9/11 era, the Columbia VA Health Care System’s (VAHCS) Post-9/11 Military2VA (M2VA) Program, held a commemorative event to honor the service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment of our nation's Veterans, service members, and dedicated healthcare staff.

The event, held in the lobby of the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center, served as a platform to provide valuable information on the Post-9/11 M2VA Program and the PACT Act, offering a resource hub for Veterans and their families. But it was more than just facts and figures; it was about acknowledging the resilience and stories of those who have played a pivotal role in strengthening our nation since the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

"Today, we remember the sacrifices made by our Veterans and Service Members, and we celebrate their unyielding dedication," Scott Smith, the organizer of the event. "Our mission is to ensure that they receive the support they need, both in healthcare and in life beyond the uniform."

The anniversary of 9/11 has posed challenges for our country and Veterans for 22 years now. It has also provided us opportunities to reflect on just how resilient we are as a people and nation. The Service Members and Veterans of this era have endured the longest running war in U.S. history.

“In FY22 we connected with nearly 3,000 Post-9/11 Veterans,” said Smith. “We know there are more out there. We want to connect with and assist them as well.”

In addition to the event, a special commemoration was hosted by the hospital's chaplain service. When asked why he chose to host this event, Columbia VAHCS’ Chaplain Service Chief Robert Bellin explained, "Aside from being a defining moment for our nation, [9/11] also effected people on a personal level. A lot of folks went to war, a lot of folks died, and even more returned home changed, so we wanted to take this time to acknowledge them. The emotional and spiritual support of our Veterans is just as important as their physical well-being. We must honor their sacrifices in every way possible."

The commemorative event was a poignant reminder of the enduring strength and commitment of our nation's heroes, ensuring that their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
