Croasdaile VA Clinic Opens for Veterans

Mr. Robert Campbell, a Vietnam War Era Veteran, has his vitals checked by Nicole Williams-Hellams, a Registered Nurse at the Durham VA’s new Croasdaile VA Clinic.

As part of its effort to expand quality health care services to its Veterans, the Durham VA Health Care System opened a new clinic to meet the growing needs of Veterans within the Raleigh-Durham triangle. On Tuesday, August 15, 2023, the Croasdaile VA Clinic officially opened its doors to Veterans.

“This is the culmination of three years of planning and preparations,” said Dr. Pinakin Vias, Croasdaile VA Clinic Medical Director. “We’ve always done our best to provide excellent health care to our Veterans, and this new space will allow us to expand our health care mission.”

The Croasdaile VA Clinic provides a full range of outpatient services for Veterans in Durham County and the surrounding area. Some of the services the clinic provides are Primary Care, Mental Health, Radiology and Nutrition. These services were previously provided at the nearby Hillandale VA Clinics, but with the Raleigh-Durham area’s Veteran population rapidly expanding, the need for a new and larger location became clear.

“Simply put, we needed more room,” says Dr. Vias. “However, we will not be closing the Hillandale locations. Other Durham VA services will use those clinics and we will still be training new residents there.”

In 1991, Shelby Hyman, then a newly minted phlebotomist and recent DVAHCS hire, was present for the opening of the then new Hillandale Clinics. Tuesday’s grand opening of Croasdaile Clinic was a poignant moment for her.

“I remember how chaotic it was for me, 32 years ago,” says Ms. Hyman, now a Health Care Technician at the Croasdaile Clinic. “We had to move all our gear to Hillandale, and that was a massive undertaking. The move here was so much easier, and I feel I have more room to do my jo, which helps me better serve our Veterans!”

The opening of new clinics like Croasdaile is part of the DVAHCS and the Veterans Health Administration efforts to bring the care to the Veterans, giving them more health care options in their communities and continuing the mission to provide world class care to our Nation’s heroes.

“This is my first visit to a VA Clinic,” says Mr. Robert Campbell, a U.S. Air Force Vietnam War, and retired Army National Guard Veteran, as well as Croasdaile’s first patient. “So far, Croasdaile is a great first impression. Everyone here has been great, and I think any Veteran who walks through these doors will be happy they came.”
