REFERRAL COORDINATION INITIATIVE (RCI)

Robley Rex VAMC is focused on being truly Veteran-centric by encouraging Veterans to participate in their own health care journey.

In response to the expanded care options through the MISSION Act implementation, VHA’s change to its referral process will improve timely access to care and the overall Veteran experience.

While eligibility standards for community care based on MISSION Act criteria are not changing, Veterans will have the opportunity to speak with RCTs about their eligible care options at VA medical facilities or with a VA community care provider so Veterans can make an informed decision about their health care needs. VHA strives to continuously improve the Veteran experience by helping Veterans personalize their care journey.

VA will continue to provide an exceptional Veteran experience and deliver the highest quality of care and services – whether the Veteran chooses to receive direct VA care or care in the community. Eligibility standards for Veterans to receive community care are not changing.

At Robley Rex, we continue to expand innovative care options for Veterans, including phone and video appointments. Our Referral Coordination Teams are building and maintaining accurate, up-to-date directories of nearby providers and the various available health care options across VA (such as telehealth) for Veterans to choose from. If they are eligible, this will include community care providers.

What can I expect when my VA provider refers me to specialty care?

• VA provider submits a referral for you to receive specialty care

• VA referral team reviews referral and looks at eligible care options

• VA referral team calls you to share all your eligible care options

• You choose where, when, and how you want to receive care

• VA schedules your specialty care appointment

What are all my care options?

Your care options will vary depending on your health needs. Care options may include (but are not limited to):

• Telephone and telehealth visits

• In-person visits at nearby VA

medical facilities

• Community care options if you are eligible

Why is my VA provider referring me to specialty care?

Your health care provider is referring you to a medical specialist for a more in-depth evaluation of your health care concern. Referrals are a critical moment in your health care journey, and VA believes you should select a provider that meets your needs, within the time you need it.

Robley Rex VAMC will continue to provide an exceptional Veteran experience and deliver the highest quality of care and services – whether the Veteran chooses to receive direct VA care or care in the community. Eligibility standards for community care are not changing.
