Understanding your transplant benefits

Madison VA Hospital offers benefits for Veterans needing organ transplants.

Veterans using VA health care pay less:
  • Some Veterans have no copayments for medical care and prescriptions.
  • Medication copayments are capped at $700/year for all Veterans.
  • Copayments depend on factors like disability rating, income, service record, and priority group.

For details, visit VA health care copay rates.

Health care benefits:
  • Free transportation or mileage reimbursement for transplant-related travel.
  • Free lodging for the Veteran and one support person during pre- and post-transplant care.
  • Shared electronic medical records for better communication and care coordination.
  • Managed care by a transplant nurse coordinator.
  • Access to experts in transplant medicine, surgery, pharmacy, social work, nutrition, and physical therapy.
Post-transplant care:
  • Continued health care support and benefits, especially for pharmacy needs.
  • Veterans can choose dual care (VA and non-VA providers) or transfer all care to the VA.
  • Veterans using VA pharmacy benefits must see a VA primary care provider at least once a year.
