Media invited to cover ‘Community Engagement to Prevent Veteran Suicide’

Milwaukee , WI — The Milwaukee VA Medical Center is hosting a symposium aimed at preventing Veteran suicide.

“Community Engagement to Prevent Veteran Suicide” will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at the War Memorial Center, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, Milwaukee. It will focus on resources to aid Veterans experiencing a mental health crisis.

Leaders from the religious community, local health care organizations and Veteran service organizations have been invited to attend, as these groups often interact directly with Veterans and can provide help and direction for Veterans struggling with mental health problems or thoughts of suicide.

The event will include presentations by the Milwaukee VA’s suicide intervention team, a resource fair and VA S.A.V.E. training, which equips anyone with the tools needed to help a Veteran contemplating suicide.

  • TIME AND DATE: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 2.
  • LOCATION: War Memorial Center, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, Milwaukee.
  • ITINERARY:
    • 10 a.m. — Welcome, invocation, Pledge of Allegiance and introductions
    • 10:15-10:30 a.m. — Remarks from:
      • James Bond, Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs secretary-designee.
      • Dr. Graham Knowlton, Milwaukee VA Lead Suicide Prevention Coordinator.
      • Timothy Mclean of Elmbrook Church.
    • 10:30 a.m. to noon — Resource Fair
    • Noon to 1 p.m. — Lunch and networking
    • 12:30-1 p.m. — Q&A with Dr. Graham Knowlton re: COMPACT Act, which guarantees free care for any Veteran in suicidal crisis.
    • 1-2 p.m. — VA S.A.V.E. training
