West Palm Beach VA remains steadfast for the growing Women Veteran population

PRESS RELEASE

November 1, 2023

West Palm Beach , FL — The West Palm Beach VA Healthcare System (WPBVAHCS) introduces Contraception on Demand (COD). This initiative provides high quality, accessible contraceptive services through implementation of two promising strategies: pharmacist prescribing and 12-month dispensing.

To bridge the gap among Women Veterans and reproductive health care, the WPBVAHCS is getting ahead of the demand for contraception by offering 12-month prescriptions versus the typical maximum of 3-month dispensing.

Health care is prime when acted on proactively. This seamless partnership among Pharmacy and Providers encompasses an initial robust discussion on the recommended contraceptive method based on the personal needs and medical history, followed by the prescription pick-up.

Sara Windrem, WPBVAHCS Innovation Specialist, says, “Dismissing barriers, delivering what our Veterans need, and making it a breeze, is what this implementation is based on. As the fastest growing Veteran population, we must remain steadfast in the advancements we adopt and ensure all age groups of Women Veterans are served as they deserve."

As a top strategic priority, access is at the center of innovation. This contraception progression dismisses access issues and refill delays for Women Veterans to support family planning and autonomy.
