VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System housed more than 1,790 homeless Veterans in 2023

PRESS RELEASE

January 31, 2024

Los Angeles , CA — As part of VA’s nationwide homelessness goals for 2023, the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System has permanently housed 1,790 homeless Veterans.

“These 1790 permanent housing placements were the highest in the Nation and represents an increase of 38% over the 2022 total,” said VAGLAHS Deputy Director John Kuhn. “This dramatic improvement is the result of the effective collaboration between VA and its partners, through a process known as One Team, pioneered in Los Angeles.”

These placements, along with placements provided by other VA health care systems across America, led to VA housing 46,552 Veterans nationwide, meeting and exceeding its national goal by more than 22.5%.

“Exceeding our 2023 permanent housing goal is a testament to our team’s dedication to ending homelessness for the Veterans that entrust their care to us,” said VAGLAHS Interim Director Rob Merchant. “Ensuring that Veterans have safe, reliable shelter is the first step in delivering the world class healthcare that Veterans have earned and deserve.”

Ending Veteran homelessness is a top priority of VA and President Biden, who has made supporting Veterans a key pillar of his Unity Agenda for the nation.

VAGLAHS also exceeded engaging with 2,184 unsheltered Veterans to connect them with the housing and resources they need and ensure 95.5% of Veterans housed have remained in housing. Additionally, 97.5% of the Veterans who returned to homelessness were rehoused or placed on a pathway to rehousing.
