VA Western New York Housed 162 Homeless Veterans in 2023

As part of VA’s nationwide homelessness goals for 2023, the VA Western New York Health System (VA WNYHS) has permanently housed 162 homeless Veterans.

In 2023, the VA Western New York Health System (VA WNYHS) permanently housed 162 homeless Veterans.

These placements, part of VA’s nationwide homelessness goals for 2023,  along with placements provided by other VA health care systems across America, led to VA housing 46,552 Veterans nationwide, meeting and exceeding its national goal by more than 22.5 percent.

“This goal was achieved through the hard work and dedication of our VA WNYHS homeless programs staff, our grantees and contractors and our valued community partners. Through their hard work and the multiple programs for Veteran homelessness, VA WNYHS supported 672 Veterans in calendar year 2023,” said VA WNYHS Medical Center Director, Michael J. Swartz.  “The progress we’re seeing with Veteran Homelessness in Buffalo and other communities we serve throughout western New York shows that we have the right solutions to end homelessness for all Veterans we care for.”

Ending Veteran homelessness is a top priority of VA and President Biden, who has made supporting Veterans a key pillar of his Unity Agenda for the nation.

VA WNYHS also exceeded its goal by ensuring 96.3 percent of Veterans that were housed in calendar year 2023 have successfully maintained their housing. Additionally, 83.3 percent of the Veterans who returned to homelessness were rehoused or placed on a pathway to rehousing.
