As for the option of remote learning, Superintendent Maggie Fehrman said in a news release that because of continuing widespread electric and internet outages, remote learning is not possible at this time.
  • Avery County Schools will remain closed until it is safe to return. Although there is no set timeline, the goal is to reopen as soon as possible. Administrators will provide staff, parents and students with a 72-hour notice of reopening to give everyone time to prepare.
  • Buncombe County Schools will remain closed until it is safe to open. That will require power and water restored to its buildings, and there is substantial work to be done. To help families plan, BCS will give adequate notice of when it is safe to reopen.
  • Hanger Hall School remains closed through Oct. 11 but plans to open Oct. 14 if power is restored to the buildings.
  • Haywood County Schools will be closed through Monday, Oct. 14, for all staff and students. Oct. 7-11 will be No Days for all staff and students, and Oct. 14 is an optional workday. Students return Oct. 15 on a two-hour delay. Regular schedule is expected to resume Oct. 16.
  • Henderson County Schools will remain closed for students through Oct. 11. At this moment, the goal is to reopen the schools the week of Oct. 14. Once a final decision is made, the system will inform families of the exact date HCPS will bring back students.
  • Madison County Schools will remain closed until it is safe to reopen. When a firm opening date is established, the system will announce it in advance, giving families plenty of time to prepare.
  • Mitchell County Schools will be closed until further notice. Staff is urged to volunteer at local shelters during this time of need.
  • Transylvania County Schools will be closed through Oct. 11. There will be staff optional workdays Thursday and Friday, Oct. 10-11. School is scheduled to open for students Oct. 14.
  • Watauga County Schools will be closed for students, teachers, and teacher assistants through at least Oct. 11. While all our schools have power, internet and phone systems are not operational at six schools. Also, the system will be working with NCDOT to determine when it is safe to put buses on the roads. The system said it wants to reopen school as soon as it can safely do so.
  • Yancey County Schools will remain closed for students, faculty and staff through at least Oct. 11. The school system said there are still many families in need and the infrastructure is still being worked on: power, water, sewer, internet, roadways, buildings and rescue efforts.
