Madison VA Director Enters Retirement After 34 Year VA Career

PRESS RELEASE

April 25, 2023

Madison , WI — The Madison VA Hospital and Clinics announced Tuesday that its director and CEO, John Rohrer, is retiring at the end of April.

Rohrer was appointed as director in January 2016. He has more than 34 years of federal service with the Department of Veterans Affairs, with 32 of them in various positions at the Madison facility. He also spent four years as a private sector health care consultant.

Rohrer is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison LaFollette School of Public Affairs and began his career at the Madison VA as the administrative resident in 1986. He worked at the Asheville, North Carolina VA earlier in his career and spent time as the acting director at the Tomah VA Medical Center prior to becoming the Madison director.

“It has truly been the honor of my life to work with all the dedicated professionals at the VA on behalf of the worthiest population in the world, our Veterans,” Rohrer said.

In October 2022, the Madison VA was awarded the VHA’s #1 Best Overall Experience Award out of 170 VA facilities nationwide, based on patient and employee satisfaction surveys. Rohrer stated that receiving this award while the facility was still working its way through the pandemic spoke volumes about the quality of care the staff delivered and the culture that they have built over many years, and he is proud to have been a part of the Madison VA team.

A national search has already been initiated to select the center's next director. Alicia Miller, Associate Director at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, will be the initial acting director, beginning May 1, 2023.

The William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital and Clinics serve 95,000 Veterans in 19 counties with clinics in Madison, Beaver Dam, Baraboo and Janesville, WI, and Freeport and Rockford, IL. The Madison VA Hospital provides 105 acute medical, surgical, neurological, cancer, transplant and psychiatric care beds, as well as a 14-bed Community Living Center.
