George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center
***ADVISORY*** Our main facility phone number (VA Health Connect) is experiencing increased wait times for Veterans utilizing this 24/7 virtual care service. VA Health Connect represents the options available to help you access your health care (for example, rescheduling appointments, prescription needs, or speaking to a nurse) each time you dial your local VA facility number. We apologize for the inconvenience and the delays to answer calls from Veterans, caregivers and family members. We are working to resolve this issue.

Visiting hours and policies
Normal visiting hours are between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. The VA Salt Lake City Health Care System respects a Veteran’s right to make decisions about their care, treatment and services and to involve their family in their care decisions.
GENERAL VISITOR GUIDELINES
- All visitors with a contagious illness should postpone their visit until they are no longer contagious.
- Visitors are encouraged to enter and exit through the main lobbies of each building.
- All individuals must follow current VA Salt Lake City Health Care System masking guidance.
INPATIENT AREAS
- Normal visiting hours are between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Overnight visitation is not authorized, except in the case of end-of-life care.
- Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Visitation is allowed as long as it is not infringing on the rights and privacy of another patient.
- No plants or flowers are allowed to be delivered to patients.
- If a patient is in isolation for COVID-19 visitors will be trained and given proper personal protective equipment.
- Any visitor may be requested to leave for brief periods as needed to provide privacy for patient care, patient confidentiality and/or patient rest. This request may be made by the patient, the nurse or the medical staff.
FACE MASKS ARE REQUIRED IN HIGH RISK AREAS
- Infusion clinics and its waiting areas,
- Dialysis and associated waiting area,
- Emergency Department and its waiting areas,
- Masking also continues to be required for those with a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection or other viral respiratory infection.
Inpatient psychiatry
The inpatient psychiatry unit (3A) has unique needs which have necessitated the establishment of encouraged visiting hours from 6-8 p.m. to support the therapeutic structure and environment of the unit. The Substance Abuse treatment unit also has unique program therapies which allow for visitation on Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday. Visitation at alternative times may be arranged with the treatment team if it meets the health care needs of the veteran and the milieu of the unit.
Patients may be visited at the bedside, the unit lounge, the lobby of any patient care building, the Canteen and outside on the grounds.
Flowers for patients are welcome, except in intensive care and oncology units. Gift balloons are also welcome, provided they are mylar. Latex balloons, which can cause allergic reactions, are not permitted anywhere in the hospital.
Patient privacy
To respect and ensure patient privacy and confidentiality, visitors may be asked to leave the room during a treatment or during a discussion with the staff.
Infection control
Visitors who may be ill should wait until their health is better before visiting friends or family at the medical center.
Billing Issues
We offer assistance with billing issues (Care in the Community and TriWest).
Animals
Pets are not allowed in the medical center. Service dogs and animals associated with formal programs sponsoring animal assisted therapy or activities are allowed. The animal must be kept on a short leash. Proof of rabies vaccination is required for the animal. In special patient circumstances the facility director or his or her designee may grant special permission for a personal pet to visit a hospitalized patient. The staff will give guidance as to appropriate locations for the animal to visit.
