Advice nurse

Talk with an advice nurse if you have questions about your care or for help in deciding whether you need an urgent or routine appointment.

The registered nurses on our Nurse Advice line provide you and your family with helpful medical advice and free, confidential answers to many of your health care questions. Call anytime. We’re here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, our nurses can:

  • Help you manage many of your basic health care needs
  • Answer questions about your current medications or medical condition
  • Discuss your health care concerns and help you decide the best way to handle them
  • Offer improved access to our services

Emergency care

In an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest VA or non-VA emergency department. We provide immediate treatment for serious, life-threatening health emergencies such as severe chest pain, seizures, heavy uncontrollable bleeding or moderate to severe burns.

The emergency department is a level four emergency service which provides medical services by emergency medicine specialists open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The scope of care includes pediatric through geriatric populations, including women’s health and mental health.

Our specialists offer reproductive health care services, including contraception and family planning, sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment, evaluation of vaginal bleeding problems, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and infertility evaluation, pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, abnormal Pap smears, and menopausal issues.

Military sexual trauma care

Military sexual trauma can happen to anyone. If you experienced sexual assault or harassment during military service—no matter when you served—we provide counseling and treatment.

We offer care for military sexual trauma at our facility. Military sexual trauma refers to sexual assault, sexual harassment, or other threatening, offensive, or unwanted sexual advances, activities, or remarks that you experienced in the military. Our goal is to help you improve your quality of life with strategies to manage emotions and memories related to your military sexual trauma. Our services include:

  • Counseling
  • Psychiatric care
  • Walk-in care

Reach out to Safe Helpline for 24/7 anonymous, confidential and tailored support for service members and beneficiaries affected by sexual assault and worldwide access to trained professionals.

Psychiatry

If you’re struggling with a mental health problem—or just need to talk with someone—we can help. We offer treatment and support such as therapy, alternative treatments  and medications when needed.

Good mental health is a vital part of your overall wellness. Our psychiatry teams offer consultation, evaluation, and treatment to help you with a range of mental and behavioral health problems, including:

  • Depression (including sadness and grief), anxiety (including worry and nervousness), and personality disorders
  • Addictive behaviors and substance abuse
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and combat-related stress disorder
  • Emotional issues like anger management and relationship challenges, confused thinking, memory problems, and invasive thoughts or ideas
  • Aggressive or self-harming behaviors

 

PTSD care

If you have symptoms of PTSD after a traumatic event, we can help. We offer assessment and treatment support such as private counseling, group therapy and medication. It’s never too late to get help.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault. It’s normal to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping after this type of event. If symptoms last more than a few months, it may be PTSD. We can help you with effective treatments and support services, like:

  • Psychiatric and psychological counseling
  • Services for Veterans who are homeless
  • Treatment for addictive disorders
  • Transition and care management for post-9/11 combat Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and Operation New Dawn (OND)

Audiology

Common conditions: tinnitus, vertigo, hearing loss, vestibular conditions

We diagnose and treat conditions affecting your hearing or balance, including hearing loss, tinnitus (noise or ringing in the ears) and dizziness.

Our audiology clinic provides diagnostic and rehabilitative services for pediatric through adult populations and hearing aid services. We offer a full range of audiology services including:

  • Hearing evaluations from birth - adulthood
  • Selection, management, and repair of hearing aids and assistive listening device assessments. Tricare does not cover hearing aids
  • Retired military members and their dependents are eligible to purchase hearing aids at the government rate, known as the Retiree-at-cost-Hearing Aid Program (RACHAP)
  • Evaluation and treatment for auditory processing disorder
  • Progressive tinnitus management
  • Comprehensive vestibular evaluations

Cardiology

Our cardiology specialists offer advanced treatment and care for conditions affecting your heart and blood vessels, including heart disease, stroke, heart rhythm disorders and high blood pressure.

Our cardiology specialists offer exceptional care for conditions affecting your heart and blood vessels, including heart disease, stroke, heart rhythm disorders and high blood pressure. Available cardiac testing modalities include transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, exercise and pharmacologic stress testing, heart rhythm and blood pressure monitors, as well at cardiac computed tomography.

Cardiology provides full services include:

  • Consultative and continuing medical evaluations
  • Compensation and pension evaluations
  • Performing procedures that include:
    • Electrocardiograms
    • Echocardiography
    • Cardiac stress testing (with and without imaging modalities)
    • 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitors
    • 24 hours to 30 days cardiac rhythm monitors

Chiropractic

Chiropractors work closely with your health care team to diagnose and manage muscle and joint conditions, including problems in the back, neck and other areas.

Dental/oral surgery

We offer dental screenings, cleanings, X-rays, and fillings. We also provide specialty dental procedures like root canals, restorations, and dentures.

At the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Medical and Dental Clinic and USS Osborne locations we offer:

At USS Red Rover we capture initial dental radiographs and perform initial forensics and treatment needs examinations for all new enlisted recruits entering the Navy as its sole enlisted dental in-processing clinic.

Care is provided at USS Osborne to recruits and Active Duty personnel assigned to NMRTC Great Lakes only, call 847-636-3788 for assistance.

 

Dermatology

Common conditions: psoriasis, eczema, skin cancer, acne, rosacea, allergic skin diseases, ulcers

Our dermatologists offer expert treatment for a range of conditions that affect your skin, hair and nails—from acne to psoriasis to skin cancer. We also offer skin cancer screening and education.

Dermatology provides full service dermatologic care to categories of adult beneficiaries.  Procedures performed include excisions of skin lesions, cutaneous biopsies, laser and light therapy. 

Endocrinology

Common conditions: diabetes, thyroid conditions, parathyroid conditions, endocrine conditions

We provide caring, expert treatment for diabetes and disorders of the endocrine, hormonal, glandular and metabolic systems.

We provide a full range of endocrine care including diabetes, bone health and other hormonal issues.  We provide special diabetes education including insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring training programs. We also provide expertise regarding hormonal issues specific to Active Duty women.  We are a referral source for autonomic neuropathic disorders. We provide fine needle aspiration biopsies of the thyroid and management of thyroid disorders.

Gastroenterology

Common conditions: acid reflux, fatty liver, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, diarrhea, cancer screening

Our gastrointestinal (GI) specialists offer treatment and procedures (endoscopy, colonoscopy) for conditions affecting your GI tract, gallbladder, liver and pancreas, including acid reflux, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, irritable bowel syndrome, and pancreatitis.

Gastroenterology (GI) provides full services including:

  • GI consultation 
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures such as:
    •  Upper endoscopy and colonoscopies
    • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
    • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
  • Video capsule endoscopy (VCE)

Hematology/oncology

If you have a diagnosis of anemia, lymphoma, leukemia or another blood cancer or disorder, we support you with expert care and treatment.

We provide consultative services to all beneficiary categories for wide variety of conditions.  Services provided include oral and IV chemotherapy to cancer patients, iron infusion therapy for primary care patients and immunosuppressive therapy in support of the rheumatology, GI and neurology.  Procedures performed include bone marrow aspiration and biopsy for diagnostic hematology and oncology diseases.

Infectious disease

If you have an infection, we can help evaluate and treat it. We can help with hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis.

The infectious disease (ID) department provides in-patient and outpatient services for a wide variety of clinical conditions. In-patient consults are seen by ID team members through their in-hospital stay, discharge and until completion of antimicrobial treatment if continued after discharge. ID evaluates immunizations and prophylaxis related to international travel. Infectious disease provides HIV post-exposure and pre-exposure prophylaxis services. HIV-infected patients make up the majority of patients seen in the out-patient clinic.

ID also runs infection control (IC). The IC team is responsible for the health safety of the patients and their families, health care workers, visitors, and volunteers, as well as the cleanliness of air, water, and the inanimate environment. High risk infections, multi-drug-resistant organisms, and emerging pathogens are continuously and closely monitored.

Laboratory and pathology

We offer blood tests and other advanced testing services. Our tests help you and your TRICARE health care team monitor your health, find and understand any health problems, and make informed treatment decisions.

Our laboratories provide a full range of clinical and diagnostic testing services. Our laboratory and pathology services include:

  • Study of blood, urine, and other bodily fluids for illness management
  • Testing for infectious diseases
  • Cytopathology (study of unusual cells) and surgical pathology (study of tissue removed during surgery)
  • Autopsy services

 

Nephrology

Common conditions: Dialysis, kidney disease, high blood pressure, hypertension

Our specialists offer you advanced care for kidney-related diseases like chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure and fluid and electrolyte problems. We also provide dialysis and related support.

Nephrology provides evaluation and treatment of patients with acute and chronic kidney diseases.  These include kidney stone diseases, disorders of fluid and electrolytes and difficult to manage and complicated renal hypertension.  They provide oversight of in-patients requiring hemodialysis.

 

Neurology

Common conditions: cognitive disorders, epilepsy, headache, motor neuron diseases, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, stroke

Our specialists evaluate and treat conditions and diseases of the brain, spine, and nervous system, including headache, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and other conditions.

Neurology sees all patients with or suspected to have central or peripheral nerve disease as well as muscular conditions.  It performs EMG’s, EEG’s and LP’s as indicated and also has a neurologist trained in injection therapy as part of pain management to include the use of Botox.

Our nutrition experts work closely with you and your care team to help make sure you’re getting the nutrition you need to get and stay as healthy as possible.

Operational medicine

We offer health assessments and screenings that you may need before joining the military, going overseas, re-enlisting, or joining other special programs.

Operational medicine provides services related to periodic health assessments (PHAs), deployment health assessments (DHAs), physicals, suitability screenings, deployment screening (IA), separation and retirement screenings. To receive services from operational medicine, you must:

  • Complete joint registration
  • If you have never received medical care at Lovell FHCC, NMRTC Great Lakes, or Fisher Clinic, contact our registration desk at 224-610-3747 to enroll
  • No appointments will be scheduled until joint registration is complete for services members and all dependents requiring screenings

Ophthalmology

Common conditions: cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease

Our ophthalmology specialists diagnose and provide medical and surgical care for conditions that affect your eyes—like cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

Ophthalmology is the medical and surgical specialty involving the eyes and ocular structures. Our focus is to restore and preserve visual health. Our service is made up of eye physicians and surgeons, a registered nurse who serves as our surgical coordinator, health technicians, and administrative staff.

Optometry

Common conditions: vision exams, prescription eyeglasses, corrective lenses

Our optometrists offer you routine eye exams, preventive vision testing and treatment for conditions like glaucoma. We also provide prescriptions for eyeglasses and other assistive devices.

The East campus optometry clinic provides primary eye care services. Equipped with the latest ophthalmic instruments, our clinic provides comprehensive, compassionate, patient-centered eyecare to all ages of eligible patients. Services we proudly provide include:

  • Comprehensive, dilated eye exams
  • Prescriptions for eyeglasses, renewing contact lens prescriptions for current wearers, and other assistive devices
  • Military special physicals (ex: aviation/flight physicals)
  • Military refractive surgery referrals and co-management
  • Diabetic eye exams
  • Diagnosis and management of diseases and injuries of the conjunctiva, cornea, lens, retina, and other ocular structures

Orthopedics

Common conditions: arthritis, musculoskeletal disorders, tendon repair, ligament repair, joint replacement

Our orthopedists offer advanced care and treatment for issues related to muscles, bones and joints, including arthritis, disorders of the muscles and bones, tendon and ligament repair and joint replacement.

  • Foot and ankle fracture treatment, repair of cartilage, torn tendons and ligaments
  • Injections to reduce pain and swelling
  • Joint arthroplasty (surgical repair or reconstruction) and replacement
  • Minimally invasive surgery and post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Foot health maintenance procedures (bunion removal and nail trimming)

 

Pulmonary medicine

Common conditions: tuberculosis, respiratory conditions, sleep apnea, sleep problems

Our pulmonary medicine team treats diseases and conditions that affect the lungs and breathing, including asthma, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, acute respiratory distress syndrome and sleep apnea.

Speech pathology

If you have difficulty speaking or understanding what other people are saying, we diagnose and treat problems with fluency, voice, understanding, and other communication disorders. We also diagnose and treat problems that affect your ability to swallow.

Speech-language pathologists provide high quality, comprehensive, caring and timely services to individuals who have a wide range of communication and swallowing disorders.  Speech-language pathology services include the early identification or screening, evaluation, and treatment for speech, swallowing, language, voice and cognitive- communication disorders.  Services are provided based on applying the best available research evidence, using expert clinical judgment, and considering the patient’s individual preferences and values.  

Speech-language pathologists are involved in the screening, evaluation, and treatment of a broad range of communication and swallowing disorders, including:

  • Speech disorders:  When a person is unable to produce speech sounds precisely or fluently then they may have a speech disorder.  Difficulty pronouncing sounds or articulation disorders, and stuttering are examples of speech disorders.  Speech-language pathologists offer treatment for motor speech disorders and accent modification. An individual with a regional or foreign accent is not being understood at school or work and may benefit from treatment.
  • Language disorders:  Difficulty understanding the spoken language and verbal expression is often due to stroke or traumatic brain injury.  Aphasia is a language disorder frequently seen after trauma to the left hemisphere of the brain and includes difficulty in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and gesturing, but does not affect intelligence.  Speech-language pathologists provide individual and group treatment for individuals with aphasia.
  • Cognitive disorders:  Cognitive problems include difficulty with attention, memory, orientation, organization, and problem-solving.  A speech-language pathologist will work with the patient and their family to improve cognitive skills or to develop compensatory strategies designed to improve ability to function at home, school, and work.
  • Voice disorders:  Speech-language pathologists provide evaluation and treatment for disorders of voice including pitch, loudness, and nasal resonance.
  • Swallowing problems (dysphagia): Speech-language pathologists specialize in swallowing disorders or dysphagia and evaluate individuals who are experiencing problems with eating and drinking.  Dysphagia may co-exist with a wide variety of neurological or structural problems and treatment may include modification of food or liquids, positioning while eating, or exercises to improve swallow function.

Speech-language pathologists are specialists in providing recommendations for a wide range of assistive technology for individuals that are unable to speak or may need compensatory strategies to assist with memory or organization. Examples of assistive technology include a picture board paired with a laser pointer, utilization of applications (apps) for smart phones for a tablet, or a device that produces computerized speech accessed by an eye gaze switch.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is when a current or former intimate partner (like a boyfriend, girlfriend, or spouse) stalks, harms, or threatens to harm their partner. Intimate partner violence can be emotional, physical, or sexual. It can also lead to short-term and long-term health problems, and a wide range of mental health issues. If you or someone you know is in a potentially abusive or violent relationship, we can help. We offer:

  • Intimate partner violence care coordinators
  • Links to community-based support groups, and advocacy and legal services
  • Referrals to and coordination with other treatment providers
  • Connection to domestic violence shelters
  • Interventions for patients who use violence in their intimate relationships
