National Hunger Action Month

By Veterans Health Administration

September is National Hunger Action Month. The goal is to raise awareness about hunger in America and inspire action.

Every day, many Veterans struggle to provide adequate, nutritious food for themselves and their families. This is why VA is a proud leader in the White House’s National Strategy to end hunger by 2030

Led by our Food Security Office, we are developing nationwide resources for VA facilities through partnerships, research, education, data management and an interdisciplinary approach to ensure Veteran food security.

We are:

  • Using the National Food Insecurity Data Dashboard, which provides information on the number of completed food insecurity screens, the demographics of Veterans screening positive for food insecurity and the screening location.
  • Publishing a Food Hub Playbook, an essential resource for sites interested in launching a food hub. Food hubs combine food pantries with services such as same-day access to social work and dietitian services to address social determinants of health.
  • Committed to educating and training VA employees on food security topics, including identifying food-insecure Veterans, clinical interventions, best practices in food insecurity, community partner opportunities, Veteran whole health, food prescriptions and developing food hubs.
  • Promoting a food security initiative to establish interdisciplinary committees at VA medical centers, encouraging collaboration between disciplines to address food insecurity and achieve nutrition security.

Together, we can help spread the word about Veteran food insecurity and help ensure that all Veterans have equitable access to nutritious, affordable, and culturally appropriate food.
