Honoring Our Heroes: Marion Veteran Affairs Police Hosts a Salute to Law Enforcement
By Willy Martinez, Public Affairs Specialist

On Friday, May 17, 2024, the Marion Veteran Affairs Police hosted a heartfelt event to pay tribute to our dedicated law enforcement officers who have bravely served and continue to protect our community.

The atmosphere was filled with gratitude and respect as the Marion Veteran Affairs Police hosted a salute to fellow law enforcement officers. It was a poignant moment to recognize the dedication and selfless service of those who put their lives on the line every day to ensure the safety and well-being of others.

During the event, local law enforcement officers parked their vehicles around the flagpole, at the center of Marion VA's historical building, creating a visible representation of the unity and solidarity within the law enforcement community. Marion VA cop cars were in line with Marion City Police Department, Secretary of State Police, and Illinois State Police vehicles, as well as police vehicles from Williamson County Sherriff's office. It was a powerful sight to see officers from different departments coming together to celebrate their shared commitment to serving and protecting the community.

As part of the event, Veterans and VA staff were invited to join in camaraderie and fellowship while enjoying delicious hamburgers and hot dogs provided by the Marion VA Canteen Service. Guests offered a "Thank You" to the officers that were present.

In addition to the camaraderie and gratitude, Marion VA Police Service also promoted one of their own - Officer Cooper was promoted from Lieutenant, to the rank of Major.  Salute!

The Marion Veteran Affairs Police's Salute to Fellow Law Enforcement was a touching tribute to the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of our local heroes. It served as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and honoring the invaluable contributions of law enforcement officers who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.

The Marion VA wishes a Happy National Police Week to all those that wear the uniform and keep us safe in our communities.

“To pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to voice our appreciation for all those who currently serve on the front lines of the battle against crime.” – John F. Kennedy
