Research Appointment Requirements

Everyone who wishes to work in Research and Development (R&D) Service at the PVAMC must have a paid or without compensation (WOC) appointment at the PVAMC. If you already have an appointment in another Service outside of R&D, no other appointment is needed. You only need to complete certain forms specific to Research.

Credentialing and Privileging of Research Staff
Credentialing is the verification of education and experience of an employee. The credentialing process must be fully completed prior to working on approved research projects. For more information regarding credentialing, please read R&D's policy Credentialing of Personnel Involved in Research (35KB PDF)

If an applicant has a license, certification, or registration and the position they are being appointed to in Research requires them to use the license, certification, or registration, the applicant will need to be credentialed by the PVAMC through VetPro and privileges must be granted in accordance with the facility's Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations prior to performing the interventions covered under the privileges to be granted.

A Without Compensation (WOC) Appointment is required for anyone who does not have a Portland VA Medical Center paid appointment, e.g., is paid by OHSU or the Portland VA Research Foundation (PVARF), and

• will see identifiable data or interact with human research participants
and/or
• will work on VA property
and/or
• will be on an Intergovernmental Personnel Agreement (IPA)
and/or
• will be or are currently on a contract through another PVAMC medical service

You do not need a research WOC appointment if

• you currently have a WOC through another VA Service or Department
or
• you are currently a medical resident/fellow working at the Portland VA
