Research & Development - Required Research Training

 

The following is the research-specific training required at the VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS). Note that depending on your status or the type(s) of research with which you are involved, you may need to take more than one of the trainings.

Research Personnel Involved in VAPORHCS Human Research must also complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) “Basic Course in the Protection of Human Subjects." This training is required prior to appointment and every three years thereafter.

Included is anyone who:

  • will interact with participants, and/or
  • will see identifiable data, and/or
  • are members of the IRB or the R&DC (voting and ex officio), or
  • are members of the R&D Administrative Office whose responsibilities include involvement with human research

CITI Basic Course in the Protection of Human Subjects
Initial Training: You will need to take this course if you have never taken CITI training before or if it has been longer than three years since you last took CITI training. When you register for the course, you will need to take the five required GCP modules plus your choice of eight electives from the list of 18.

Refresher Training: If you have previously taken CITI and have not had a break (longer than three years), you must complete the six required GCP refresher modules plus your choice of eight elective modules from the list of 32.

Print and follow these instructions (35KB, MSWord) to register and complete the CITI course.

Research Personnel with Access to VAPORHCS Research Areas (e.g., those working in labs or other research areas with restricted or unrestricted access) must also complete General Safety Training (163KB, PDF). This training must be taken prior to appointment and yearly thereafter. You must complete the quiz at the end of the training and submit it using the online form in order to receive credit.

Research Personnel Working in Wet Labs must also complete Laboratory Safety Training (2MB, PDF). This training must be taken prior to appointment and yearly thereafter. You must complete the quiz at the end of the training and submit it using the online form in order to receive credit.

Research Personnel Working with Radiation or in a lab licensed for radioactive materials must also complete Radiation Safety Training (308KB, PDF). This training must be taken prior to appointment and yearly thereafter. You must complete the quiz at the end of the training and submit it using the online form in order to receive credit.

 


 

Research Personnel Involved in VAPORHCS Animal Research must also complete the following CITI courses:
1) “Working with the IACUC” (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee)
2) Appropriate species-specific courses (e.g., “Working with Mice in Research Settings,” "Working with Rats in Research Settings”)
Print and follow these instructions (25KB, MSWord) to register and complete the CITI courses as applicable. Please visit the Veterinary Medical Unit training page for more information on these and other trainings for animal research staff.
These trainings must be taken prior to appointment and every three years thereafter.

IACUC Members and IACUC Support Staff must also complete the CITI course “Essentials for IACUC Members" (29KB, MSWord). This training must be taken prior to appointment and every three years thereafter.

 


 

Research Personnel Who Have WOC Appointments must also complete VA Privacy and Information Security Awareness and Rules of Behavior (TMS ID: 10176) combined training as well as the Privacy and HIPAA Training (TMS ID: 10203).

This training must be taken prior to appointment and yearly thereafter. Initial training will be through VA's Talent Management System (TMS). You will receive your username and password from the Research Office Training Coordinator once your completed WOC packet has been returned to the Research Office for processing. The VA's training system will send reminder notices via email as training begins to expire.
