Interferon Beta-1b (Betaseron, Extavia)

Interferon beta-1b (Betaseron, Extavia) is a medication administered by subcutaneous (SC) injection, every other day, for the treatment of relapsing forms of MS and people with secondary-progressive MS who continue to experience relapses or acute attacks. It is also approved for use in individuals who have experienced a first clinical episode (clinically-isolated syndrome) and have MRI features that are consistent with MS. Interferon beta-1b is theorized to down-regulate proinflammatory cytokines, decrease major histocompatibility antigens, and reduce T-lymphocyte passage across the blood brain barrier.
