Veterans Health Information Exchange (VHIE)
VHIE Program Overview
Veterans Health Information Exchange (VHIE) tools are used by health care providers to seamlessly and securely access the information they need to coordinate your care.
Your care team can safely send and receive electronic health information through a secure gateway, the Joint Health Information Exchange (joint HIE).
Electronic health information exchanges connect health care providers, care facilities, pharmacies, and labs to ensure care teams have the most up-to-date and accurate information in order to better treat patients. VHIE’s secure exchange system eliminates the need to send paper medical records by mail, or to carry your paper records to appointments with federal health care providers and/or participating external providers.
Seamless and secure sharing means your care team will be able to:
- Better understand your health history and be able to focus more time on what is important to you
- Develop safer and more effective treatment plans
- Work together to improve your overall health
VA only shares your health information with participating external providers when they are treating you.
