Update Electronic Sharing Options

VHIE’s secure system eliminates the need to send paper medical records by mail or carry your records to appointments with participating non-VA providers.

You are in control of how VA shares your electronic health information. There is no action you need to take for VA to start sharing your electronic health information. If you do not want VA to share your health information electronically, you may opt out at any time. If you previously opted out but want to resume secure and seamless sharing, you may opt back in.

VA does not share your health information with participating non-VA partners and providers unless they are treating you.

How do I opt out?

Below are three options for opting out of sharing your health information:

Option 1: By Mail

Mail VA Form 10-10164 to your nearest Release of Information (ROI) Office. Find the nearest VA Medical Center (VAMC) facility using the location tool.

Option 2: In Person

Take VA Form 10-10164 to your nearest ROI Office in person.

Option 3: Online

Signing into My HealtheVet on VA.gov Medical Records and scrolling down to find Manage your electronic sharing settings.

If you opt out, your providers will not receive your electronic medical records in real-time, which would be used to better coordinate your care. This may put your care coordination at risk. There is no deadline to opt out and you may do so at any time. Choosing to opt out will not affect your access to care from community providers.

Can I opt back in?

If you previously opted out but want to resume secure and seamless sharing, you may do so at any time by completing VA Form 10-10163 and returning it to your facility's ROI office or by following the same process outlined above on My HealtheVet on VA.gov Medical Records
