Salesforce Military helps Veterans, Service members, and military spouses learn on their own time

Author: Dr. Tracy L. Weistreich Nurse Executive, VHA National Center for Healthcare Advancement & Partnerships (HAP)

Brie Hintze, military spouse and employee of a Salesforce partner company, was completing a training module through Salesforce Military when smoothie splattered across the carpet, wall, and her toddler. She couldn’t finish the module that day, but that was OK. When she was ready, Ms. Hintze picked up right where she left off and continued training towards her certification.

“It [Salesforce Military] gave me so much drive and excitement, and kind of ignited a career awakening,” Ms. Hintze said.

Salesforce Military offers online training and certification exams at no cost for active-duty Service members, Reserve, Guard, Veterans, and military spouses. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) partnered with Salesforce to help Veterans, Service members, and military spouses like Ms. Hintze learn more about the benefits and services they may be eligible for.

“It's single-handedly the best career decision I could have made,” Ms. Hintze said. “The fact that it was at no cost is just surreal because the value it has given me has been life changing.”

Under the partnership, Salesforce Military and VHA developed the VA Benefits for Veterans training module, which identifies U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) resources for Veterans across social determinants of health (SDOH) such as economic stability, employment, and health literacy. The module, which has been accessed by more than 2,000 people, provides an overview of VA benefits and how to access them.

As a full-time mom, Ms. Hintze wanted to go at her own speed while searching for a remote career opportunity. The flexible program allows participants to set their own pace and deadlines. Ms. Hintze took her time, discovered the best path, and was amazed at the results.

“I realized just how ambitious I was now that I had a tool I could use in a remote environment that could work for my military lifestyle,” Ms. Hintze said.

According to Health Action Council, there is growing recognition that SDOH can impact employees’ mental, physical, and emotional well-being. VHA career assistance programs such as Personalized Career Planning and Guidance and Veterans Readiness and Employment, and community partner programs like Salesforce Military, support the Veteran and Veteran-spouse workforce across SDOH.

During her career journey, Ms. Hintze applied to the Hiring our Heroes and Salesforce Fellowship, which was developed through a partnership between Salesforce and Hiring Our Heroes. It gives transitioning Service members, Veterans, and military spouses an opportunity to participate in paid job training for 12 weeks with firsthand experience and exclusive on-the-job training. It was through the application process that Ms. Hintze interviewed and received a direct offer from her current employer.

“Having a challenge and learning the power of this technology, what it could do for business, just fascinated me,” Ms. Hintze said. “I noticed myself picking up a little bounce in my step. I felt so happy having this new challenge, a new goal, in my life.”
