User-Centered Design to Improve Video Device Usage Among Older Rural Veterans
User-Centered Design can enhance resources, enabling rural, older Veterans to successfully access and utilize telemedicine. Rural residing adults > 65, experience barriers with telemedicine such as access and usability. The Veterans Health Administration (VA) established the Digital Divide program (DD) to provide VA-issued tablets and increased access to internet service for Veterans.
We used evidence-informed guide lines and user-centered design to improve the usability and experience of written instructions and access to telemedicine for rural, older Veterans receiving a VA-issued tablet. Dr. Kelley and her team developed 2 handouts to make the setup and use of these tablets easier for Veterans: 1) Veteran iPad Easy Start-up Steps and 2) Veteran iPad Tips for a Successful Appointment.

Description: The COVID-19 pandemic forced a number of changes to the qualitative research cycle, including an increased use of technology-mediated approaches to qualitative research. These more digital research workflows have opened up new data sources (e.g., chats alongside video), normalized some underutilized data sources (e.g. video recording), and confounded traditional data collection methods (e.g., direct observation and site visits). These changes have generated questions about information security and privacy, rigor, and equity. The presenters will explore some of these modifications and innovations using case studies of research projects that had to transition to, or begin with, COVID-sensitive processes. The presentation will end with resources for our continued engagement with virtual qualitative methods.
