OAA Feature
"To educate for VA and the Nation" remains one of VA's foundational missions. For 75 years, VA has worked with academic institutions to provide high quality, state-of-the-art health care to America's Veterans and to train new health professionals to meet the rapidly evolving health care needs within VA and the Nation.
VA’s Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) plays a pivotal role in educating future health care professionals in more than 60 health professions. There are many benefits for health professions trainees and residents when training at VA. They experience a true interprofessional system while providing integrated care to Veterans. The educational atmosphere that academic affiliates help provide allows trainees to enter a multidisciplinary environment that is rich and effective in helping them develop the skills they need to provide clinical care to Veterans and beyond. At VA, trainees gain unique insight and experience in coordinated patient care designed to address all aspects of health including physiological and psychosocial conditions. Trainees are introduced to models like the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT), a team-based partnership with Veterans and their individual health workers to provide holistic and comprehensive care. Physicians, nurses, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers and more collaborate to ensure the best patient outcomes.
