Associated Health Education
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a leader in the training of clinical associated health professionals. Associated Health Education (AHE) includes all health professions with the exceptions of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing. Through affiliation agreements with more than 1,400 individual health professions schools and colleges, clinical placements and fellowships are provided to health professions trainees (HPT) in more than 60 professions.
VA Health Professions Education (HPE) programs play a leading role in creating the health care workforce for VA and the nation. Over 70% of VA podiatrists and psychologists and over 80% of VA optometrists participated in VA training programs prior to employment.
To meet national mental health workforce needs, VA’s Mental Health Education Expansion (MHEE) initiative has added more than 770 funded training slots across ten professions since 2013. MHEE offers opportunities for interprofessional education and team-based care.
