SQUARES

SQUARES - Using Data to End Veteran Homelessness

Status Query and Response Exchange System (SQUARES) is a transformative VA web application designed to provide reliable and detailed information about Veteran eligibility to various stakeholders. This includes VA employees, homeless service community partners, law enforcement partners (such as police departments, sheriff departments, courts, and jails), and local, state, and federal agencies, community-based suicide prevention efforts. SQUARES users enter key identity attributes (e.g., name, date of birth, Social Security number, and sex) to retrieve real time critical information about a Veteran’s status and eligibility for healthcare and VA programs.

SQUARES is making a significant impact in the following ways:
  • Streamlining Services for Homeless Veterans: Homeless service community partners can quickly ascertain a Veteran’s eligibility for various programs and healthcare services, ensuring that Veterans and families in need receive timely and appropriate assistance.
  • Enhancing Coordination with Law Enforcement: Police departments, sheriff departments, courts, and jails can verify Veteran status and eligibility. This helps in the provision of services specially tailored for Veterans, can assist in diversionary programs aimed at supporting Veterans rather than penalizing them, and play a critical role in identifying Veterans who may benefit from suicide prevention programs such as the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention initiative.
  • Taking Veterans Out of Crisis: By providing accurate information about a Veteran's eligibility for healthcare and VA programs, SQUARES helps community partners and law enforcement quickly connect Veterans in crisis with the resources they need. This prompt access to support can be critical in de-escalating situations and provide Veterans the help needed to stabilize their lives.
  • Facilitating Cooperation between Agencies: By providing a standardized and efficient method for verifying Veteran status, SQUARES enhances the ability of local, state, and federal agencies to work together seamlessly, ensuring that Veterans receive the benefits and support entitlements without unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles.
  • Reducing Wait Times and Administrative Burden: SQUARES reduces the effort and time required to verify Veteran eligibility, allowing both VA employees and external partners to dedicate more resources and attention to delivering support and services to Veterans and families.
  • Empowering Community Partners: Non-VA organizations that work directly with Veterans populations and other vulnerable groups now have a reliable tool to confirm Veteran status, which can improve the accuracy and effectiveness of the support offered.
  • Supporting Veterans in Legal Services for Homeless Veterans and Veterans At-Risk for Homelessness (LSV-H) Grant Program). By verifying Veteran status, legal aid organizations and courts can better assist Veterans in need of legal assistance, ensuring proper support and access to legal resources tailored to their unique situations.

Overall, SQUARES is a vital tool that enhances the ability of various organizations to provide critical support and services to Veterans, significantly improving their quality of life. It ensures that Veterans, particularly those facing homelessness, legal challenges, crises, or at risk of suicide, receive the benefits, support, and preventive care they rightly deserve.
