Getting Started: Training and Orientation

Welcome to the Minneapolis VA Research Service. This orientation guide is intended to provide a broad overview to help new research investigators, employees, and WOC appointees find the basic requirements needed to get started in VA research. Detailed instructions (if available), references, and relevant policy are linked within each topic.

Investigator Orientation
Target audience: Research investigators and co-investigators.
Overview: The Investigator Orientation is focused on duties and responsibilities unique to research investigators. Information that applies to all research personnel is covered in the Staff Orientation; investigators should review both guides. Topics in the Investigator Orientation include information on securing research funding, the steps required to initate a new research protocol, and administrative considerations for supervision of study personnel.
While the presentation of the Investigator Orientation is aimed at investigators themselves, personnel assisting the investigator (such as study coordinators) may also benefit from reviewing the content of this orientation.
Staff Orientation
Target audience: All research personnel.
Overview: The Staff Orientation provides an outline of administrative information, requirements, and processes relevant to all personnel engaged in research activities. This includes investigators, VA-paid research employees, WOC employees, and IPA employees.
